My name is Sam Smith and to celebrate the Year of Horse, I am painting a horse every day for 100 consecutive days starting on 22nd January 2026.
Riding the hope and energy that comes in this important year, I am setting off on an adventure into the vast unknown landscape of 100 blank canvases...

Horses have interested artists since time immemorial from the cave paintings in Lascaux in BC 15,000 to Picasso in the 20th century and now me! Over the next four months I will contribute to this tradition as I explore a subject matter that has always intrigued me. In my work, horses are mythical, noble and powerful and I see something other-worldly about them. And yet they walk among us; this relationship between horses and humans is touching and significant to me and will likely play a part in the paintings to come...

Starting on January 22nd with Horse #001, day 100 will fall on Friday 1st May 2026 on a full Flower moon, when all 100 paintings will be displayed and up for sale on my floating gallery ‘Hope & Desperation’ along with an evening of celebrations.
